Hairy Woodpecker - Birds of Pennsylvania - 1932

Hairy Woodpecker is known as a "sapsucker" from the common belief that they subsist largely on the sap of apple and other fruit trees. This popular, yet mistaken idea, has induced many farmers and others to kill the species. The food of this species consists principally on the larvae of injurious insects that burrow in fruit trees.
